Frequently Asked Questions: When will the dogs be here next? The lounge is open for the spring semester every period, every day! Why do we need a Therapy Dog Lounge in a high school? We have created the Therapy Dog Program for stress relief for students and staff at Mountain Vista High School. Check out our researched benefits on the "Benefits" page. How does it work? Counselors AND teachers can make referrals for any Vista students who show signs of serious stress. Students can go to the Therapy Dog Lounge (in the library) with this pass for 10 minutes or longer depending on the referral time. We have trained student handlers supervising the lounge every period of the day. If there is no one there, the handlers will post where they are and when to expect them back. Students may request a pass from a teacher or counselor and he/she will determine if/when to send you. Step 1: Have a legal waiver signed by a parent or guardian before your first visit. The legal waiver can be found posted above. Step 2: Request an official pass from a teacher or counselor. Step 3: Come to the LIBRARY with an official pass to de-stress and love on the pups! Step 4: Return with less stress! Can the dogs visit my classroom? The Therapy Dogs are now available for 10 minute classroomvisits with a teacher request! VISTA TEACHERS, if you are interested in a little visit for stress-relief in your classroom, please follow these steps:
Pick a future day when you have your class doing a fairly quiet and calm activity and when you think your students might benefit from having a therapy dog visit your room.
Before that day, ask all students in your class if anyone has serious phobias or allergies to dogs. (Our dogs are hypoallergenic so allergies shouldn't be an issue with them, but we want to respect any student that does not want to be near the dogs.) Ask this during class and have them tell you (confidentially) whether there is an issue.
At the time you would like the therapy dog, send a student to the Therapy Dog Lounge in the library with a green pass. Indicate on the pass that you would like a classroomvisit.
If a dog is available, a trained student handler will escort the dog to your room for a 10 minute visit.
Where is the Therapy Dog Lounge? The Therapy Dog Lounge now in the LIBRARY! Come check out our new space! Can I just drop in without a pass? You will need a referral pass to visit the Therapy Dog Lounge and will need to sign the legal waiver posted above before your first visit. You will sign in and sign out and the handlers will check your pass. Who owns the dogs? Bella is Mr. Larson's (Prof. Learning Facilitator) personal pet. Roo is Mrs. Barnard's (English teacher) personal pet. Are the dogs trained and insured? The dogs are trained as therapy dogs by Prestige K9 and are fully approved, vaccinated, insured and approved by the school and DCSD Risk Management. Can I be a Student Handler next semester? See Mrs. Wheeler (U317) or your Counselor for an application and we'll see! Juniors and Seniors only. How can I start a Therapy Dog Program at another school?
